Plantain is a staple food and money spinner for those that understand its production and market. In Nigeria, plantain market has been in existence for decades which is an open market, i.e., a market where any seller can enter to display his or her product. It is a very close relative to banana, but it is more starchy and larger than banana in size.

Findings in Agro businesses affirms that the only state in Nigeria that consumes the highest cultivation of plantain crops is Lagos because it’s the only state in Nigeria whereby farmers send their produce from states like Delta, Edo, Ondo, Oyo, Osun and Ogun state. Let’s say, you purchase a bunch of plantain having 40 to 50 fingers, normal, for the price of N1,000 to N1,500 from the farmer, same bunch of plantain can be sold for N3,000 to N4,000 in the city following the current trend for prices of goods and services in the country. I recently went to a local government area close to the city of Port Harcourt in Rivers state to asked after the price of such normal size of plantain hoping the price would be less, but to my surprise the market women sell these bunches for as much as N3,000 to N4,000. It made me imagine what the price of such plantain would be in the city of Port Harcourt where plantain is demanded in huge quantities due to its usage in the local delicacy known as “BOLE”.

2. Chose where to sell your produce

In every business there are times when the need for services to be rendered will come, this is mostly what determines the regeneration of your business, a period which determines whether you will go bankrupt or not for not being able to make sales, a period which determines the whether you will make profit or not.

There are two practical markets available for sales of plantain to be made easily:

a. Local markets

These local markets are seen close to or within our residential areas, such markets include, Onisha market, Mile 12 market at Lagos, Oil mill market at Port Harcourt, etc. you can get a store space at the market to be known seller of plantain or take your produce there on a daily basis to make sales. This may provide you the opportunity of making huge sales as large amount of people troop in and out of such markets daily.



b. Industrial companies

These companies exist in major cities in the South west and some selected states across the nation. These companies use these plantains for several purposes such as chips, plantain flour, among other varieties of processed foods. Such companies buy plantain in huge quantities so it is advisable to search for their office address and locate them in order to supply plantain to them when you reach a deal.

c. Advertise your business

This is another important factor that has to be taken into consideration for your business to prosper.

Consider approaching your potential customers to let them know the kind of business you are into, this will sensitize them to knowing your business and they will definitely contact you when they need your produce.
