The bridge was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and opened by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990; it measures about 11.8kmin length.
The Federal and Lagos State governments have identified accessible roads to guide motorists and reduce travel time during the partial closure of the Third Mainland Bridge for rehabilitation works scheduled to begin on July 24, 2020.

The first phase of the third mainland bridge rehabilitation will focus on Oworonshoki inwards Lagos Island in the morning with traffic diversion from 12 midnight to 1pm and then Lagos Island inwards Oworonshoki will divert traffic in the afternoon from 1pm to 12 midnight.
The importance of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos cannot be over-emphasised. It is not just the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, everyday millions of people are ferried through the bridge to ease movement in the city. So the chaos shutting it down for a whopping six months would cause can only be imagined.
The bridge starts from Oworonshoki which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island.
